As the speed of change continues to dominate our lives, and the news is littered by stories of trouble and turmoil it is easy to forget that each of us has the ability to decide how we respond to these events.
Emotions peak and ebb constantly amid a bombardment of choices. Uncertainty is growing about our direction and the future.
Despite the stress and chaos caused by climate change, economic instability and global insecurity, people are coming together. Hope and a positive momentum are building among the future caretakers of humanity and our planet. These people are what I call the Joined Up Leaders of the future
Hope is driven by the qualities of the heart: appreciation, happiness, care, compassion, etc. These qualities are strengthened by:
• Spiritual practices like meditation, prayer and coherence-building techniques.
• Heart connections with others and caring relationships within and outside our families.
• Frequent gathering with friends and loved ones
Great leaders are masters at demonstrating the traits of being Joined Up and living from the heart. Some the practices they adopt include:
• Genuinely appreciating everything and increasing heartfelt positive emotions.
• Generating positive feelings before, during and after activities and encounters to increase the texture and richness of life experiences.
• Practice care for yourself and others.
• Guard against negative projections about themselves, someone else or the future.
• Be objective about issues that arise, as if they are someone else’s. Focus on the heart area and breathe in a positive feeling or attitude. Listen to their heart for solutions.
Interestingly, practising these activities also leads to coherence. Among the characteristics of psycho-physiological coherence are smooth heart-rhythm patterns, greater heart-brain synchronization for improved cognitive ability, and efficient, harmonious functioning of cardiovascular, nervous, hormonal and immune systems.
So what is Coherence?. The Institute of HeartMath define coherence as:
“Feelings of genuine hope, appreciation, care and compassion signal your heart to send harmonious and coherent signals to the brain/mind, replacing feelings of separation with connection. The heart and brain align, and your electromagnetic field sends out a coherence wave, locally and globally. Higher cortical functions are enhanced, enabling greater objectivity and intuitive perception”
as opposed to incoherence which is:
“Stress, overwhelm, anxiety, uncertainty and fear send chaotic and incoherent signals to the brain/mind, inhibiting higher cortical functions and trigger stressful responses. The heart and brain are no longer in sync and solutions to personal and global problems elude us. Negative emotions register in your magnetic field, generating an incoherence wave”
And guess what, I always notice that my clients become more coherent in the presence of the horses. (And to prove this I have recently started using the HeartMath emWave and Inner Balance applications to help confirm this). There is just something about the energy of the horses and the connection that people experience that unlocks their heart and makes them open to these emotions of hope and possibility. This is why it is not unusual for people to cry during the experience, as they get deeply connected to their true authentic self. The part of us that often, especially in a corporate environment, we hide and leave at the door. And yet this is the part of us that others want to see and that effortlessly enables us to develop connection and relationship to build our business.
So if you’d like to get connected and find your true authentic self, then give me a call and I’ll book you in for an appointment with the horses.

“Values are not what we want, but something intrinsic which you absolutely need in your life in order to be true to yourself.” – Cherry Claus
The term authentic leadership has been around for a while and a key starting point for any leader to be truly authentic is to know what your values are. Our values are in essence our internal compass or GPS and give us clues to our internal standards and measures. They are what we hold dear and are what’s important to us and are therefore pivotal in what motivates us. Yet so many people are unconscious of their values.
When we are clear about our values we can make decisions more clearly and often faster, understand what motivates us and when we are being true to our values we will be more energised.
So what is a value?
Think of your values as a GPS – when you wander off the path or lose direction, they bring you back on track. Values are something we naturally move towards or away from, they are the things we are willing to spend energy on. They are largely unconscious and drive your true purpose. They provide the push, or motivation to take action and serve as an evaluation criteria, or judgement about our actions. They are the way we judge good or bad, right and wrong, appropriateness or inappropriateness.
When you are fully clear on your values, you attract to yourself people of like mind who share the same desire to lead a purposeful, authentic life.
- Our values or perhaps the ‘personal rules’ which we choose to live by, influence our emotions and behaviours, and have an enormous impact on what we do and what we say.
- Values are the supporting framework for our beliefs and are strongly connected to our identity.
- Our primary principles and way of life are controlled by our values.
- They furnish us with direction and motivation to accomplish tasks or challenge situations.
- Our values impact every angle of our lives and the lives of those we interact with.
- Values are what give meaning to our lives.
- Values are closely linked to our vision, of what’s possible, or what we can become.
- Values stimulate our vision of what we want.
We organise our values hierarchically, so those higher up the hierarchy we search for first in terms of decision-making, evaluating etc. Once the higher values have been satisfied those lower down the hierarchy are then satisfied. It’s not automatic that once you have fulfilled the higher values those lower down are satisfied.
Values also determine our behaviour. Someone with a values hierarchy of adventure, family happiness, health, pleasure, and wisdom will handle a situation very differently from someone with a values hierarchy of order, loyalty, freedom, achievement and friendship.
How do I know when I’m not living my values?
If you are not living by your values you are likely to be unhappy, and if you don’t know what your values are you won’t be able to pinpoint exactly why you are not happy.
If someone violates one of your values you will also feel a degree of discomfort, hurt, annoyed or angry and it won’t always be obvious why you feel this way.
If you have set goals in the past which you firmly believed you were capable of achieving, and yet you haven’t achieved them, it’s very possible that the goals may have not been congruent with your values.
If you have not yet identified what your values are at work, what is important to you about the work you do, give me a call and I’ll start you on the journey to elicit your values.

Have you:
- Ever paid for training you never used?
- Bought books you never read?
- How about coaching you never implemented?
- Got a stack of “shelf” rather than “self” development programmes and books on your shelf?
Unfortunately this is not a rare thing–it’s rumoured that 80% of coaching clients don’t implement what they learn. I have nothing but compassion for these people because I used to be one of them. I foolishly believed that going on courses was the answer to all my problems. If I just learnt more my business would soar and clients would be attracted to me.
What I didn’t know at the time was that some deeply ingrained fears and childhood programming was preventing me from implementing what I knew I had to do. It was my mindset that was holding me back. It took investing in over 100 programmes to realise this (now that’s a lot of cash! and I don’t want you to have to go through that pain).
Initially, I’d blame the program, other times I’d blame the coach. They didn’t understand me. My business was different. But the truth of it is that I was afraid to address the inner work I needed to do. I hoped that throwing money at and buying more resources would make my fears go away, but it never did. Things only changed when I started facing my fears and doing the inner work.
Here are some ways that we avoid facing the fear:
Throwing Money At Things
Spending time creating a new website, posting on social media or just hiding out behind your computer will not help you bust through the fears stopping you becoming visible and connecting with others. So often my clients say to me that I’ll just connect with them once my website is complete. I used this strategy very effectively for years – and as some of you will know I had multiple websites to keep me busy – but this never works or helps you attract clients. Only by getting out and speaking to potential prospects can you expect your business to grow.
Throwing Money At People
Coaches and consultants are great and I am never without a coach. They can tell you what’s happening, point out patterns in you that you can’t see and give you clarity around what to do next. However, NONE of them can put a gun to your head and actually make you do the thing that makes you cringe or hide under the table. Eventually, you will have to be doing it by yourself and reconcile with your fears and demons. As I constantly tell my clients, you are 100% responsible for your results-good AND bad.
Throwing Money At Events
If you are not willing to be a different person, to act differently than what you’ve always done, what’s the point of spending money to go to networking or training events to grow your business? Buying a ticket and sitting in a seat doesn’t mean you can tick off the marketing plan ‘to do’ list. Are you trying to give advice, connections and friendliness at strangers? Are you willing to help people who look lost and alone? Do you follow up with every single person you were fortunate enough to meet? If you’re not, just stop throwing money at events in the hopes that they’ll grow your business.
Having well and truly busted myself on this, I really help that I have helped you realise that spending money on things without taking ACTION is NOT going to change your life. The only way things will change is to feel uncomfortable, step out of your comfort zone, feel the fear and take action. In fact my best advice would be to use the fear to fuel your action rather than quash it.

I don’t know about you but when I talk with many of my clients I often find that despite the fact that they are striving for success in their business, they are also engaging in acts that sabotage that success. I know that has been the case for me recently.
I have this picture in my bedroom that says: “Don’t confuse your career with your life”. I brought this when I was working in the corporate world but I have realised that this paradigm is still true for me when I’m running my own business. So many of us get focused on the success of our businesses that we fail to stop and review what is really going on in our lives.
There are definitely situations I am tolerating as a business owner that I would not when I was an employee, and to be truthful some of these are making me miserable. So why am I doing that? Why I am sabotaging my business success?
The irony is that ambition and the desire for success can in fact become the very thing that can sabotage your chances for success.
So, if you’re feeling physically or mentally burned out, there comes a point where you have to ask yourself, Is my career ambition taking over my life?If you don’t want your career ambition to block your own success her are four ways to keep that from happening:
1. Break the multitasking habit.
I have to confess that I’m a work-in-progress when it comes to realizing that multitasking is not my friend. I knew I had a serious problem when one day I looked up and realized that I had a notebook, laptop and iPhone all in front of me, and I was trying to do something different on each of them. Needless to say I wasn’t very productive and ended up with a bunch of partially finished things—not one thing actually completed.
No matter how skilled you think you are at dividing your attention, you really are more effective when you focus and break that Entrepreneurial ADD problem. Don’t jump ahead or try to do it all at once in an effort to save time. You’ll feel more accomplished, building momentum you need to go onto the next task, if you complete just one task at a time.
2. Catch some real Sleep.
Forget what you heard about sleep-deprived super-successful people. Getting no sleep and working through the night is overrated—the all-nighter, “I-only-need-four-hours-of-sleep” bit isn’t something to brag about. Because no matter how late you stay up, if you aren’t productively knocking things off your to-do list, it doesn’t really matter.
And if you’re waking up tired every morning, you will end up cranky and frustrated—and unproductive. Both your mind and your body need that time to rest and recover, to wake up refreshed. It’s not just OK to get that eight hours—it’s necessary to be at your peak, personally and professionally – and that happens when you get uninterrupted, deep sleep.
3. Stop comparing yourself to other people.
I have to confess to be a comparitus addict. I do it all the time, often under the guise of research. Every time I’m on LinkedIn or Facebook, I see what other business owners are achieving and compare myself to them. This then makes me feel bad that I’m not as successful in meeting my goals.
The thing about comparing yourself to others’ achievements is that there is never a win. Someone will always seem to be one step ahead of you. Make a commitment to only compare yourself to the best version of you.
4. Remember to make time for family and friends.
I get it. You’ve found your passion and you’re excited to get to work to make it a reality. You’re so excited and motivated that you’ve forgotten you need to spend quality time with the important people in your life.
Any relationship takes work—contact and communication—in order for it to stay alive, so make some time. You can’t discuss all of the progress you’re making in your career with your computer, and believe me, you don’t want to suddenly realize the only person you’ve had a real conversation with lately is Siri or your horses!. I’ve been told many times by my friends that I just need to take a break, have fun and “turn my brain off.” While I haven’t quite mastered that yet, what I have learned is that I don’t have to figure everything out right now.
So just remember work is just one part of your life and that whatever you are working on can wait for a minute or even an hour or two. Don’t be afraid to turn your brain off and rest and relax.

This past week I’ve been working with several clients helping them to create their dream business and 90 day marketing plan. And one of themes that has continually come up of it is that when it comes to marketing our businesses we very often take the easy option.
I know so many of are telling me that you don’t have enough hours in the day to get everything done, and whilst I know that might feel true, the real reason is due to the fact that you are not focusing on income generating activities and being visible in your business.
Hey, I get it. Often it is easier to think we are being productive by hiding our behind our computer and doing activities such as:
- Updating your website
- Posting a status update to social media
- Writing a new article
However, your business is going to succeed and prosper if you grow by getting out of your comfort zone and doing something different. Remember the old Einstein saying:
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them“
So if you want to grow your business you’ll need to learn to step out of your comfort zone. Activities that might be out of your comfort zone include:
- Reaching out to a potential referral partner
- Attending a networking event
- Speaking either online or in-person
The technology we have available to us is making it easy for us to take the easy option; but yet make us feel like we’re marketing. Hence, the frustration with lack of results.
Whereas the most effective forms of marketing, especially for professional service providers, is all about personal connection and building relationships. Which means you have to take a step out of your comfort zone to do it.
So my challenge to you this week is how can you mix up your marketing so that you’re combining easy with the more challenging marketing activities? Post your comments on facebook at let me know.

As we kick start the New Year a great question to ask yourself is what will you do differently this year? This is something I have been asking myself over the Christmas holidays and I already have some cool plans in place to make some changes.
Changing the way things are done can bring opportunities for great success. But reaction to change may be fearful and irrational, which can result in failures, a decrease in quality and a loss of production? When it comes to work and business, it can be tempting to give in to those anxieties by doing what’s always been done. But priming the pump to have a better year always involves some form of adjustment to free up the time, money and energy to tackle new opportunities.
How do you decide what changes are the most important ones to make?
Ask yourself these questions:
- What personal and business tolerations interfered with personal and work progress? Tolerations are a good indication of issues in need of resolution?
- Were last year’s goals reached? Why or why not? How will those obstacles be addressed? Setting new goals without having evaluated the previous year’s goals can result in a cycle of substandard results?
- What fiscally responsible goal (making more money, collaborating, creating new products/services, improved marketing strategy, etc.) will also be fun? All work and no play makes Jack a dull (and bored) boy, as the saying goes.
What do you need to change to have a better year?
Choose passion over profit. Connect to your bigger purpose in life, work and business and the rewards will flow effortlessly. Passionate people attract success?
Higher learning. Technology changes fast. Staying on top of what’s working now is only half the battle. Discovering what’s up and coming and leveraging that knowledge is the key to an exceptional year?
Celebrate success. Acknowledging and rewarding success keeps everyone motivated. Mark those mini-milestones with celebration and recognition!
Add, don’t subtract. When repeat clients stop buying your products or services, something needs to change. Instead of cutting prices, add value instead–bundle existing services/products, add bonuses or create new offerings.
What are your blind spots?
Every driver has blind spots. That’s what rear-view mirrors are for. Blind spots in the work and business environment can be harder to identify. How does a person avert disaster in a work environment without the benefit of mirrors?
Ask around. Getting honest feedback from clients, customers and service providers can be as uncomfortable as it is invaluable. Do it anyway?
Seek professional help. Getting an objective outsiders opinion can help you see what is going well or not?
Coffee time. Chat up a colleague and encourage them to share their observations about what you are doing well and what needs improvement. Sometimes what needs to change is missed because it is so “obvious.”
Moving into a New Year doesn’t have to be a scary proposition. Having a clear sense of what’s ahead can circumvent failure and create a successful year. And if you want some help identifying your blind spots just apply for one of the limited, complimentary Accelerate Your Success sessions that I offer every month. You’ll be glad that you did.

“If you can conceive something in your mind and believe it to be true, then you can achieve it.” – Napoleon Hill
Napolean Hill said it best when he said, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.”
But what he said next is even more important and often not quoted. He then goes on to say “…regardless of how many times you have failed in the past or how lofty your aims or hopes may be.”
In his book entitled Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill states that it is scientifically impossible to conceive something in your mind, to believe that you can do it, and then not be able to. The very fact that you can conceive something in your mind, and believe that you can do it, means that you can.
Belief is an ever important aspect of creating a thriving business. If you can imagine it, but you truly don’t believe it, then you will not be able to achieve it. Your worry, doubt and uncertainty will act as a barrier that prohibits your financial goals or any other goals from manifesting themselves.
Most of us have not begun to tap into our true greatness and all that we are capable of achieving. In fact in his book The Other 90% Robert Cooper suggests that as much as 90% of our potential is untapped. Wow. That’s amazing. Just imagine what would happen if collectively we all tapped into some of this. Just think how much more we could all achieve. So do you want to know the secret for unlocking your greatness? It is in your mind.
The power of our mind is truly amazing. Most people doubt themselves. For some it’s occasionally, for others it’s often. We also tend to put other people on a pedestal. The funny thing is that the people we idolize often doubt themselves as much as we doubt ourselves. We all have problems, insecurities and challenges. What distinguishes the truly happy, successful and fulfilled people is how they handle problems and challenges. Belief is the best tool!
The more you believe in yourself and your abilities, the more likely you are to accomplish your goals and reach your dreams.
So what do you need to believe in order to achieve your dreams? If you heard me on SineFM last week you’ll know that one of my favourite songs is Believe by the amazing Orgena Rose. You can download the album and single on iTunes. It’s so inspiring that I try and listen to it every day. Here’s the link in case you missed it.

More people than at any time before have taken the leap to start their own businesses. This includes chiropractors, dentists, osteopaths, massage therapists, coaches, consultants, speakers, and a host of other professions.
Starting a business on your own has many challenges. For many people, the biggest one is “selling.” You can’t grow your business if you don’t sell your products and services to someone.
Yet, for many, “selling” brings up visions of sleazy used car salesmen who try to manipulate others to get what they want. Who wants to be like that? So, you’re faced with this dilemma: How do you grow your business and be a good, authentic, loving person at the same time?
The secret is to transform “selling” into “serving.” Let me show you how you do that.
Changing the Game
Selling is sleazy when it’s manipulative. Let me convince you to do something so I’ll get what I want.
If you want to grow your business, and feel good about yourself at the same time, it’s necessary to change the way you think about “selling.”
Everyone buys things. If you provide a product or service that has real value and helps people solve real problems, there is someone who will want to buy it. That someone is struggling with the problem you are prepared to solve. They wouldn’t want a solution if solving the problem wasn’t important to them. So if you can help them solve their problem and do a good job of it, you have become their new best friend. They not only will want to buy what you have to sell, they will want to buy from you again and again because now they have begun to trust that you are someone who can help them solve their problems.
When you are able to shift your thinking from “I’m selling something” to “I’m serving someone by helping them solve a problem that they care about,” you’ll find yourself feeling great when that someone buys your stuff. Here are 5 ways to make that shift.
Step #1 – Get Clear on the Value You Offer
It all begins with you understanding what are the problems you are uniquely qualified to help your clients or customers solve. Knowing where you are most trusted in business is a great place to start and you can do this by taking the free Trust Test at http://bit.ly/trusttest
But you can’t stop there. What problems does your product or service address? What resources do you bring to help your customer or client solve those problems? Why should people believe that your proposed solution really works?
Make a list of the problems and then list how your product or service solves each problem. Make a list of the resources your customer or client will have at their disposal when they purchase your product or service. Then gather testimonials, endorsements, case studies and anything else that will demonstrate your solution really works.
It’s been found that people are 10 times more likely to respond to a solution to a problem they have than they will to an opportunity to achieve something they want. So, make sure you really understand how you can help others solve their problems.
Step #2 – Understand Your Client/Customer/Partner’s “Critical Need”
Once you’ve understood in general the types of problems you are uniquely qualified to solve, the next step is to understand who has those sorts of problems and would be attracted to your particular solution.
You may think that everyone needs what you have, but that’s never true. Even if we assume everyone has the problem you’re solving, only certain types of people will be attracted to the way you solve it.
Apple has done an amazing job of helping people solve problems they didn’t even know they had–like the ability to carry their entire music library with them in a pocket size device, or to watch TV shows or videos on a book size device. Most people will agree that Apple’s products are good quality. And just about everyone wants to listen to music or watch videos these days, but not everyone is going to buy an Apple iPod, iPhone or iPad. For some the products are too expensive. For others, the products don’t go well with other equipment they already use. Apple’s success has been successfully targeting people who are willing to pay more for a product that helps them feel special and unique while being useful at the same time.
I define your perfect alliance partner as “that person or organization for whom you are uniquely qualified to fulfill their most critical need and in fulfilling that need you fulfill your own critical need at the same time.”
You’re in the business of solving problems. Step #2 is about finding the people who have those problems and consider them significant enough that they’re willing to pay to solve them.
Step #3 – Build Trust
People will only buy from or work with people they trust. These days, building trust begins by establishing a relationship with people who have the problems you are prepared to solve. You build trust by getting testimonials, endorsements, or case studies from people who have benefited from your products or services. You can also build trust by demonstrating you have had success in the past. And you can build trust by offering knowledge, service, or even products for free so that your potential customers and clients have the chance to see how well you can help them solve their problems.
You can read some of of my clients at https://www.businesshorsepower.com/success-stories/
Step #4 – Remove the Perception of Risk
Anytime someone purchases something there is a risk that it won’t serve their needs. To the extent you can show others that the risk that your product or service will not provide the promised value is very low, the more likely it is that people will be willing to invest in what you offer them.
One simple way to reduce risk is to offer a guarantee. If they’re not happy, they can return the product or service and get a refund within some period of time. A guarantee allows the customer to see if the promise matches up to their experience.
But you can reduce risk in other ways as well. You can offer additional bonuses and extras for free so the value customers receive is so much greater than what they’re paying that they feel the risk of not being satisfied is low.
The more you build your reputation, the less risky people will feel about doing business with you. When you have endorsements or support from well-known or trusted authorities, you inspire confidence that you can deliver on your promises.
Step #5 – Genuinely Care About Your Customer (this is the most important one)
When you see yourself as “serving” rather than “selling” then you let go of your attachment to “making the sale.” Your focus and concern is with making sure that your customer really has a need you (or your products and services) are uniquely qualified to fulfill. This is the place where the Golden Rule comes in: treat your customers as you would want to be treated. Your job is no longer trying to sell anyone. It becomes identifying people who have problems you can solve. These are the people you are here to serve and serving them becomes fun.

If you want to grow your business and reach the next level of success it is imperative that you create an environment around you that supports this. In my previous blogs I have shared my best tips on how and why decluttering your environment is key to your success. In this blog I will be sharing why it is imperative to create different environments to undertake the different roles that you need to get done in your business.
The big mistake that most business owners make is that they insist of doing all the activities in their business from the same place. You create an office in your home and then conduct all the activities from here. This is a big mistake as it results in us mixing up the different energies of business and this creates stress and overwhelm.
Sitting at a desk to try to study your finances, getting interrupted by phone calls, and then going back to your spreadsheet is like trying to freeze ice and boil water all in the same place. An enormous amount of energy is spent simply trying to switch from one state to another. Of course this is going to cause stress.
The key to cut stress and increase flow is to create a rhythm in your space and time, with five different places linked to your talents.
The ultimate example of this can been seen at Vision Villas in Bali where Roger Hamilton has designed five different pavilions that create five different types of energy. Each of the different energies speaks to each of the different activities of – what, who, when how and why as defined in the Talent Dynamics Pentagram.
Dynamo Space: This is your space to brainstorm, write creatively, come up with new ideas, and answer the question, What? Make it a place where you can pin things up and see the big picture. Don’t take phone calls here or text-message or use any kind of social media. Don’t get stuck in details or distracted by others.
Blaze Space: This is your space to have conversations, answer emails, take phone calls, and answer the question, Who? When you step into this space, you will have everyone’s contact information close at hand, photos of people who are important, and Post-it notes of conversations and threads to follow. Make this a space of conversation, where there is no room to daydream or procrastinate.
Tempo Space: This is your space to be calm and grounded, and to sit with team members to plan or with clients to listen. This is where everything has a When? and Where? This isn’t a place to promote or sell, but a place to provide care and service and take care of smaller people-related activities. Don’t let any overly positive or overly negative energy into this space.
Steel Space: This space allows you to concentrate on the detail, get quiet time, and focus clearly on the How? This is where you keep all your finances and spreadsheets, and where all your detailed files can be easily accessed. Keep out all interruptions, and have no phones, emails, or distractions in this space. Be willing to be critical and to take criticism from here.
Spirit Space: This space inspires you and allows you to reflect on your higher purpose and bigger mission. This is where you get to breathe and bring out your inner smile.
Initially many of you might be thinking Julia there is no way I can carve out all these different spaces at home. I’d invite you to think again. I know a professional speaker who goes to a coffee shop to get inspired and do his creative writing. The energy and the buzz of the coffee shop inspires him. For myself, my spirit space is my hot tub where I can rest and relax in the evening whilst looking at the night sky and become connected to nature. I often find that some of my best creative ideas come when I spend time with my horses – sitting in the field my mind has the opportunity to be free from any constraints and I always find new ideas for my business surface pop up. What environments can you create for yourself that will impact your business success?.
Think about a chef. When they get in the kitchen, they mark out a “Dynamo” Space to “grow” (to keep things fresh), a “Blaze” Space to “glow” (the oven to cook in), a “Tempo” Space to “slow” (the chopping board and blender to separate and connect), a “Steel” Space to “know” (keeping things cool in the fridge and freezer), and the “Spirit” Space to “flow” (the serving space where it all comes together). Then with the ingredients, the recipe and their spaces, preparing the meal is all about right place, right time.
What are the productive environments that you can create to redesign the standards by which you place your mind, body, and spirit each day? What’s the pallet in which you’re creating your masterpiece? Even if you have a full-time job or have your hands full with children, there is always a way to reorganize your time and space to bring out your best self.
Remember there’s an order to everything, and organizing your time and your spaces allows you to move through the seasons with more ease and grace, the way nature meant it to be.
In nature, nothing is rushed, yet all is accomplished.

Recently I’ve been realising that running your own business is much like being in a horse race such as the Grand National. You all want to get to the Winners Circle but how many of you have the courage to get there?. How many of you are mentally and physically prepared for the ride of your life?
As in any race you can prepare for this by yourself or you can enlist the help of a coach to support and guide you. All great sports athlete’s have coaches (sometimes more than one) who help them not only with race strategies and tactics but also with the mindset of success – the psychology of winning.
It doesn’t matter how you look at it business success is down to just 2 things:
– what you do
– how you show up
and both are needed but usually not in equal measures. In my opinion business success is much more about how you show up rather than what you do. It’s the old 80:20 rule. Unless you are mentally prepared to face your fears and get over the obstacles (aka the jumps) you will never reach the winners circle.
This is how I described the role of a coach and mentor to my new VIP client last week who has came to work with me on a six month programme to Jump Start her business so that she can reach the Winners Circle.
I used the analogy of being in the Grand National where your business is the horse, you are the rider, I’m the trainer and the jumps represent the obstacles that you will face as you ride your business over the finish line to the winners circle.
Now it turns out that my new client really got the analogy – unbeknown to me she was once a jockey and had even competed in the Grand National – that’s an amazing achievement and shows me how much courage she has. Assuming she can harness this same courage, that got her round Aintree, to her business, she is really off to a flying start.
What my client realised was that with me as her coach and trainer we can co-create and discuss all the strategies and tactics for the race but in the heat of the moment she needs to listen to her intuition and do what feels right as she rides to success. This might mean kicking on into the jump or checking her stride.
My responsibility as her trainer/coach is enter her for the the best races and set her up for success. Her role is to ride pro-actively over the fences. If she sits passively on her horse (aka her business) the likelihood of crossing the finish line and reaching the winners circle is severely diminished.
